Present Perfect Continuous

Adham and Ahmed are best friends. They have been spending time together since they knew each other. Every day, they work on Zatoonet El-Engleezy together. They have been working together for the past 3 months. Lately, Adham has not been feeling well. Moreover, Ahmed has been worrying about Adham. Therefore, he has been visiting him every day at home for the past 6 days.

As you may have noticed, today’s lesson is going to be about the Present Perfect Continuous tense.
زي ما خدتوا بالكم, درس النهاردة هيكون عن زمن المضارع التام المستمر.

First, let’s talk about the use of this tense. We use the Present Perfect Continuous to show that something started in the past and is still continuous up until now. In addition, the Present Perfect Continuous usually puts emphasis on the duration of an action.
تعالوا نبدأ باستخدام الزمن دة. احنا بنستخدم زمن المضارع التام المستمر عشان نقول ان حاجة بدأت في الماضي ولسة مستمرة لحد دلوقتي. كمان الزمن دة غالبا بيركز على المدة بتاعة الفعل.

Let’s have a look at some examples from the text above.
تعالوا نشوف أمثلة من النص اللي فوق.

Example 1: “They have been spending time together since they knew each other.”

This sentence shows that Ahmed and Adham started spending time together in the past, since they knew one another, and are still spending time with each other. So, the action started in the past and is still going on.
الجملة دي بتبين ان أحمد وأدهم بدأوا يقضوا وقت مع بعض وبدأوا كدة في الماضي, من ساعة ما عرفوا بعض, ولحد دلوقتي لسة بيقضوا وقت مع بعض. فالفعل بدأ في الماضي ولسة مستمر للحاضر.

Example 2: “They have been working together for the past 3 months.”

Here, we understand that both of Ahmed and Adham started working together 3 months ago and are still working together. Furthermore, we can see that there is an emphasis on the duration of this action, which is 3 months.
هنا احنا فهمنا ان أحمد وأدهم بدأوا يشتغلوا مع بعض من 3 شهور ولسة شغالين سوا لحد دلوقتي. ودة بيورينا ان فيه تركيز على المدة بتاعة الفعل اللي هي 3 شهور.

Example 3: “Lately, Adham has not been feeling well.”

Here, there is neither a duration nor a specific time reference. Instead, the word ‘lately’ is used, which means recently or not long ago. So, we can understand that Adham has not been feeling well recently or in the past few days. Again, the action started in the past, lately, and is still continuous.
هنا بقى مفيش مدة للفعل ولا إشارة لإمتى الفعل بدأ, لكن هنا استخدمنا كلمة "مؤخرا اللي بيكون معناها "مش من زمان أو في الفترة الأخيرة". فنقدر نفهم من الجملة ان أدهم في الفترة الأخيرة أو في الكام يوم اللي فاتوا حاسس انه مش كويس. تاني, الفعل بدأ في الماضي, اللي هو مؤخرا, ولحد دلوقتي مستمر.

Now, let’s see how to form the Present Perfect Continuous tense.
